If you’re someone who can’t relax until your house is clean, you’re not alone.
Growing up in a home with two working parents, I witnessed firsthand the chaos that can arise when our living environment is disorganized. From those experiences, I gained a deep appreciation and developed a passion for a clean and organized space.

If you can’t relax until the house is clean, you’re not imagining it – clutter and disarray truly can cause feelings of anxiety and overwhelm, while a tidy space promotes a sense of control and order.
When your home is clean, you feel a deeper connection to your surroundings and a stronger sense of peace and relaxation.
🧹Research shows that clutter and an unclean home can cause stress and anxiety while the act of cleaning and having a clean home releases endorphins that increase your focus while decreasing your stress levels.

Most of my clients are very good at maintaining a tidy space and putting their belongings away, however where they need help is staying on top of cleaning their space. Tidying can remove some of the stress, but still, often what I see is you can’t relax until your house is clean.
The best way to explain the difference between tidy and clean is put in this powerful quote “Tidying is the act of confronting yourself – cleaning is the act of confronting dirt”
We can put items away, but we still need to clean our bathrooms, surfaces, and floors to truly feel the peace and relaxation in our homes.

If you can’t relax until your house is clean, here are five tips to get started. These are the top areas to tackle to give you that feeling of clean, without taking on an entire full deep clean of your home

- Vacuum and mop flooring
- Wipe down door handles
How often should you clean things in your house?
If you can’t relax until your house is clean, this is an indicator that you may need to clean your home more often.
How often you clean things in your home is a personal choice and dependent on your preference.
Here is a basic guideline of what I would recommend to do to stay on top of your home based on a 7 day schedule that you can customize to fit your needs:
- Monday: Do laundry and clean your bathrooms
- Tuesday: Dust all surfaces
- Wednesday: Tidy!
- Thursday: Clean your kitchen countertops, cupboard marks, stove top, and other appliances
- Friday: Vacuum and mop all flooring
- Saturday: Baseboards
- Sunday: Extras such as windows, more laundry, inside of appliances
Tip: Something I like to do is set myself up to win for the morning by doing all of my dishes and wiping my kitchen countertops each night after dinner!
