Renovating your home in Hamilton can be an exciting, but daunting task.

When considering interior design in Hamilton, you want to choose materials that are visually appealing and stylish, but have you considered how easy they are to clean and maintain over the long term?

As someone with years of experience in the residential cleaning industry, I’ve seen how everyday wear and tear can affect different materials. It’s easy to fall in love with a beautiful piece, but it’s important to think about how it will hold up in the long run.

That’s why I’ve put together this blog to help you make interior design decisions that will create clean and calm spaces that last beyond the designer’s visit.

Let’s explore how you can choose the right materials and layout to create a space that is not only visually appealing but also practical and easy to maintain.

A checklist of three tips for choosing the right interior designer in Hamilton to work with for a home renovation.

Work with a Hamilton Interior Designer Who Knows Their Materials

Being a company that has cleaned many homes in Ancaster, Burlington and Hamilton over the past 8 years, just like cleaning companies, not all interior design materials or designers are equal.

Just like we discussed in our blog “How to Find The Best House Cleaner”, you want to ask the right questions about different materials and work with designers who know their stuff so you can find exactly what you are looking for.

Some of the best ways to find the right interior designer in Hamilton for you are:

  1. Visit model homes and ask who the interior designer is

  2. Look at the websites of local builders or architects and ask for referrals

  3. On local Facebook groups ask for interior designer recommendations in Hamilton, Ancaster, Dundas or Burlington

  4. Google “Interior Designer Near Me” or “Interior Design Hamilton”

Hamilton Interior Design Materials: Questions to Consider

Whether you’re moving into a new home, or renovating your current one, here are some questions to consider when picking the right materials for your home renovation project:

      Cost:

  • What is my budget for the renovation?
  • What materials fit within my budget?

    Aesthetics:
  • What kind of style or look do I want to achieve?
  • Do I want a modern, rustic, or traditional feel?
  • What color scheme am I working with?
  • Do the materials I’m considering match my design vision?

    Practicality:

  • What is the purpose of the space I’m renovating?
  • How much traffic will this space receive?
  • Will there be children or pets in this space?
  • What kind of wear and tear will the materials be exposed to?
  • How easy are the materials to clean and maintain?

    Longevity and Maintenance:

  • How often will I need to replace or repair the materials?
  • Are there any special cleaning or maintenance requirements for the materials?
  • What kind of warranties or guarantees come with the materials?
  • How will the materials hold up against spills, stains, scratches, and other types of damage?

By considering these questions, you can ensure that you pick the right materials for your renovation project that not only look good, but are practical, long-lasting, and easy to maintain.

Interior Design Tips for Low-Maintenance, Clean Bathrooms

Cleaning shower tiles

In my experience of the cleaning industry over the years, the number one design choice that will create A LOT of extra work for you in your shower is – tiles!

If you want to put tiles in your shower, not a problem! I personally would opt for larger tiles and choose a highly recommended contractor for the job.

Tiles can create a lot of extra work to keep your shower being clean because of all the extra grout that holds a lot of build-up. If you do go this route, make sure your grout is properly installed and sealed to avoid extra scrubbing and potential mold growth.

Cleaning glass showers

A popular design that really took off over the past 5 years has been glass showers. I do not think this trend is going away anytime soon, so let’s look at the most low maintenance option.

Although the glass shower design is quite beautiful, in reality it is a lot to maintain.

If you do opt for a glass shower, make sure it is not heavily framed and has a more seamless look. Heavy frames around the glass become a holding space for hard water, build-up, and mold growth and can be very difficult to clean.

A seamless shower is more pleasant to the eye, easier to clean, and much easier to squeegee (don’t forget to do this after each shower to prevent hard-water spots!).

Interior Design Tips for Low-Maintenance, Clean Kitchens

There is a lot to think about when it comes to creating a low-maintenance kitchen, but today I will focus on the area that my client’s do not want to clean at all – their cupboards.

I would opt out of wood cabinets or cabinets with ledges or grooves. These create mini shelves where food, liquids, and dust collects and makes your kitchen look much dirtier than it is.

When choosing kitchen cabinets, choose a flat surfaced cabinet (slab cabinet) that is well sealed. This way you only need to wipe down a flat surface with no detailed grooves and you can use a damp cloth to remove everything quickly and easily.

Interior Design Tips for Low-Maintenance, Clean House Floors

The biggest decision you will likely make when it comes to renovating or designing your home, is deciding on your flooring.

Carpets can be the most forgiving and easiest to maintain (no mopping or footprints!). However, if you have children or pets, staining will likely happen and then you are stuck with stained carpeting throughout your home. Carpets will also need a good carpet cleaning done at least once a year to maintain them and remove any deep build-up that a vacuum cannot get to.

My client’s and many people are choosing hardwood flooring in their homes instead. I do believe that this is the best option for low-maintenance, clean house floors.

However, not all flooring is created equal. Real wood flooring (although beautiful) needs to be waxed regularly to prevent chips, water damage, and to maintain a “shiny” and polished look. The best option is to go with a luxury laminate that is much more forgiving and choose a lighter colour (not black as it shows a lot of dust!). Luxury laminate won’t show footprints or streaking when you mop and is a much lower maintenance option for your home.

In Conclusion: Create Your Dream Space for the Long-Term

There is so much to consider when creating your dream home.

Regardless of what you choose, it is your home and if you want flooring or materials that require more maintenance – no problem!

The best way to protect your interior design project and maintain your dream space in Hamilton is to make sure it is properly taken care of. One way of doing this is to choose a house cleaner that knows how to care for the materials in your home and has lots of experience. This is one of the many reasons why we use eco-friendly products. Over the 8 years we have been in the industry, we have maintained our client’s homes with the power of plants and have never damaged any of their surfaces or flooring.

If you do choose a chemical-based cleaner, make sure you communicate the materials you have in their home and that they understand how their cleaners may interact with your home.
